Ah, the Grand Strand! Breezy coastal vibes fusing with meticulously maintained lush landscapes and the timeless allure of golf. Myrtle Beach, nestled within this strand in South Carolina, is an iconic symbol of the veritable romance between golf and good life spread over sixty miles of pristine coastline. Home to over 90 courses, each with its distinct character and charm, Myrtle Beach is nothing short of a golfer’s paradise.
The experiences embarked on these courses, shaped by the sound of a perfect drive, the friendship fostered over the fairways, or the triumph of a challenging shot, embed deep into the golfer’s heart. These memories, as vivid as the brilliant greens, resonate through time, proving that golf, in Myrtle Beach, is not just a sport but a persisting emotion.
Golfing in Myrtle Beach is said to have roots dating back to the late 1920s with Pine Lakes Country Club being the first to introduce this noble game to the strand. As a resident and an ardent golfer, my earliest memories extend to this historic club. Steeped in tradition, Pine Lakes, fondly regarded as ‘The Granddaddy,’ offers not just a fantastic round of golf but a nostalgic trip down time. From their unique seawall greens to the charm of its Scottish heritage, every element here has a story narrated through delightful rounds of golf.
However, it was at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club where my most cherished golf course memory unfolded. A prestigious Robert Trent Jones-designed layout, the Dunes Club marries the technical aspects of golf with mesmerizing coastal aesthetics. Much to my captivation, the celebrated ‘Waterloo’ hole lives up to its intimidating reputation, challenging even the most seasoned golfers. A classic risk-reward scenario, my audacious yet successful shot at this par-5 13th, have forever etched this course in my heart.
Being part of numerous charitable golf tournaments has also been integral to my Myrtle Beach golfing chronicle. The Monday after Masters, hosted by Hootie and the Blowfish at the Barefoot Resort’s Dye Club, has always been a significant fixture on my calendar. The camaraderie experienced here, set against the harmony of entertainment, golfing, and philanthropy, renders this event an unforgettable one.
Further along the beach, the love for golf is sensationally orchestrated by the masterpiece courses of Caledonia Golf and Fish Club and True Blue Plantation. Their spectacular Lowcountry design by Mike Strantz has always been a visual treat, augmenting golfing experiences.
One of my most cherished memories in Caledonia was watching the sun set over the course from the nineteenth hole. The sight of the greens gradually baptized into the evening glow, while sharing memories of a good game, embodies the quintessence of golfing in Myrtle Beach. At True Blue, the wide fairways and expansive sand-filled areas can be quite deceptive, and navigating them successfully, undoubtedly enriches your golfing memoir.
Not all memories are sweet, as I discovered at the Legends Golf Resort. Playing at their Heathland course, I was humbled by the challenge the course posed, reminiscent of the British Isles. My struggles to adapt to the links-style course and the windy conditions proved tough but edifying. While my scorecard that day wasn’t brag-worthy, it had elevated my respect for the sport, underlining the fact that golf is a journey of learning.
No golfing recollection is complete without the pinnacle of creation at Myrtle Beach, the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island. Known for its reputation as one of America’s toughest courses, a round here leaves indelible memories. The powerful sea breeze, the stunning coastline views, the ruthless bunkers, and treacherous greens, every element pushes you towards your best game while rewarding you with matchless golfing gratification.
Myrtle Beach reverberates with the deep connection between golf, tradition, joy, challenge, and nature. Each dip in the swing, every sun-kissed morning on the green, all angst faced in the bunkers, heighten one’s love for the sport. Such cherished golf course memories are testament to the spirit of the timeless game and the soul of Myrtle Beach. One cannot help but agree, golf and Myrtle Beach, indeed are a match made in heaven.
